How to Care for Your Curly Girl’s Curls in the Winter - Your Questions Answered! Part I

By Mahisha Dellinger Winter is the season that wreaks the most havoc on curly tresses. From the seemingly instant change in climate to the daily assault of dry, brittle wind and frizz-producing rain — a curly girl just doesn’t have a chance! However, you can counter the evils of winter by incorporating a good hair regime and using only quality products for your angel’s hair. I hope to provide insight to all of those with inquiries Question: I hope you can settle a difference of opinion between a co-worker and myself. Naomi and I have a mutual African-American acquaintance whose 4-year-old daughter cries when her shoulder-length hair is cared for. I commented how I would rather shorten the little girl’s hair rather than put her through such daily torture. However, since doing some research on the Internet, I’ve learned that short hair would be considered totally unacceptable by other children and the African-American community in general. Here is the question which we are trying to settle. Naomi is strongly of the opinion that cutting a child’s hair before the age of five is greatly harmful to the child’s hair. She explained that a child’s hair is replaced twice and the length of the hair determines the quality and health of the child’s hair in the future. If I remember correctly, she mentioned that a short hairstyle would result in more fragile hair and be very difficult to deal with when she’s an adult and that ‘anyone who knows hair will tell me this..’ It has always been my understanding that the hair follicles are based on genetics and that the length of healthy hair does not alter how the hair will grow out. Is she correct? And if so, does it also apply to boys? I thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this subject and I look forward to your reply. Your help is greatly appreciated. Answer: I can honestly say, I have never heard such a wives tale! Your co-worker’s claims are untrue. Her 4-year-old old daughter can ’safely’ get a hair cut without worrying about making her hair more fragile. Short or long, African-American hair needs to be treated with tender loving care to thrive….the length of her Nubian princesses’ locks have nothing do with how difficult her hair will be as an adult. To some extent, your research is correct. Most African-American girls do have a ‘hair complex.’ They long for naturally long, flowing locks that their Caucasian counterparts posess. Contrary to popular belief, African-American hair does and can grow…however, because it is THE most fragile hair texture (next to baby fine newborn hair) it tends to break off rather easily if not treated like a fine silk blouse. Because a lot of African-American girls get relaxers before they get their menstrual periods, they realize a lot of breakage, which results in short hair. I would like to say that I hope your friend does not cut her princess’s hair out of frustration. I would advise her to seek the advice of a local African-American stylist to help her learn more about caring for her delicate tresses. After all, our hair is our crowning glory. Question: I’m not a parent, but a teenager who is frustrated with my curly hair. Please help me. I have tried so many products and nothing helps. It’s probably because my hair has too many problems. My hair is dry, thick, poofy and frizzy. Even when it’s wet it looks bad. Recently, I’ve been using grease and mousse to help tame it and keep the curls in but still it’s hard to manage. I think I’m going to cut it short. Maybe that will help me, but I really wanted to let my hair grow. What do you recommend I should do? Answer: Well, I see what part of the problem is. You are using the type of products that perpetuate the problem. Avoid products that contain mineral and/or petrolatum oil as an ingredient. Do not use products with these ingredients for your hair or scalp. Both of these synthetic oils coat and suffocate the hair shaft blocking out moisture. Further, they clog pores in your scalp and can retard hair growth. Also, most mousse formulations contain drying alcohol that, again, dry out the hair. Remember this. Curly Hair minus Moisture equals Frizzy Dry Hair. Adding moisture every step of the way is critical - from the shampoo/conditioner to the styling products you use. Are you currently using a daily moisturizer? This is very important.They soften the hair, eases combability, moisturizes and conditions, preps it for the next step, and leaves a little goodness behind. Also, read your product labels. Remember, the ingredients are listed in order of volume. Question: I got my curly hair from both of my parents. You can probably imagine how curly that is. Could you please help me find something to unfrizz my hair? Do you know if it will work if I chemically straighten my hair ? I would really like to try that approach!!!!! Answer: I do not advise on chemical processes for a few reasons. I prefer for curly girls to find alternative ways of caring for their locks without resorting to chemicals…and I do not want to assume legal responsibility for ‘perms gone bad.’ However, I can say that your daily ritual can help debunk and defrizz your locks. Moving From Sales To Marketing

By Tom Dougherty When Should Marketing Take a Front Seat? At some point in a company’s growth, there comes a time when it decides whether the product or service it offers has exponential growth opportunities. If these opportunities exist, then a strategy must be formed to take the company to its full potential. Often this involves a shift from a sales-driven focus to a marketing driven status. All change in the corporate world is stressful, even if it is positive change. Nevertheless, the move from sales to marketing is one of the most stressful. Why? Because it entails leaving “what brought us here” and embracing a future with which we are somewhat inexperienced. The entrepreneurial spirit that spurred the company growth in the first place needs to be harnessed and yet stimulated in a manageable way. The reason to make the change is simple: the bottom line. If the product or service has mass appeal, it is more efficient cost-wise to market and advertise for the business than to expand the sales force. Cost per lead and cost per close should weigh in favor of advertising and marketing. If it does, then the return on investment will increase. Top Sales People Do Not Great Marketers Make Sales people are often put in charge of the department and the mindsets are, and should be, vastly different. At times, they may well be at complete odds. Salespeople make their bread and butter by tailoring the sales argument to the prospect. If they are any good at all, they will avoid strict positioning and benefit because they know that all sales ultimately require “selling themselves. A predetermined sales argument and a scripted benefit presentation are their worst enemy and greatest nightmare. A top sales manager will try not to interfere with what works. Marketing is different. It is not by nature one-on-one and is designed to have mass influence. It requires a discipline and marketing shrewdness that flies in the face of much of the sales experience. The disciplines needed to make the changes are exactly that disciplines. In addition, more often than not, the lack of discipline and unorthodox approach of division heads has accounted for their prior success. However, just as the micro management that is instrumental in building a business suffocates its eventual growth, entrepreneurial marketing will derail the attempt to harness its momentum in a corporate culture. The Cultures Can Work Together The secret to building success is incorporating both cultures in the new one. It is preferable to maintain the entrepreneurial spirit because it is the germ of growth and innovation, but it needs to be harnessed. The internal combustion engine gets its horsepower because the unbridled explosion of gasoline and spark is contained and focused within the mechanics of cylinder, piston, and valve. Corporate management must find a way to fan the flames of ingenuity. They must bolster the “take charge” attitude in the company’s middle management while wrestling the marketing power from the same individual units. A Big Difference Marketing requires us to look at the target audience as a whole, understand them as a group, evaluate their psychographics as well as demographics, and apply a strategy that exploits the most powerful advantage available to us. Notice that I did not say the most powerful advantages we have. This is important because advertising that works is always single-minded. A great marketing and advertising director will seek the counsel of the sales force when creating the strategy, but will avoid running the final product by them for approval. Why? Because salespeople deal with closing the sale and need lots of benefit weapons to be successful. They view marketing and advertising as a similar beast. Sure, the zebra and the horse might look similar, but genetically they are so different that they cannot successfully mate. Great advertising and marketing requires the identification of a position in the marketplace. Don’t Be Myopic The big picture is important here. Know the competition. Know the terrain. Know the target market. It is not enough to understand your product or your competition’s product; you need to understand their position in the marketplace. Benefits tell only a small part of the story. If all that ever mattered was benefit and product superiority, then we would all be using Apple’s Macintosh and news from DELL would not matter to us at all. Salespeople care about benefits. Marketers care about ownership of strategic position. The first step in building a brand position in the market is looking at your product or service in the crucible of the marketplace and identifying a germinal belief that relates to your business. What is it that the target market holds to be true in their lives? How does this understanding make your product or service a fundamental building block in their quest for fulfillment? What drives this category? What is the single most powerful statement you can make about your brand that might cause an action or change to take place in the precepts of the target audience? Look for a Niche That You Can Own Change the playing field and alter the selling argument. If we can successfully shift the view of the target audience, even slightly, we can mortally wound the competition. Remember, preference for a product need not be overwhelming. If your category creation can provide a simple “might be better” uncertainty to the status quo, you win. In a horse race, it is not necessary to win by a length. A nose will do just fine. No one remembers who took second place to Secretariat’s Kentucky Derby win. Yet, Secretariat won by a nose. The Tools The opportunity here is to look at the category as it is. Most businesses have grown organically and so have the categories. It is an advantage to look at them and redefine them through careful planning. Then we must develop an understanding of the precepts that always drive them. Once we have analyzed the market and category, once we have evaluated the target audiences based on the strategy of identifying the beliefs that drive them, we can begin the task of owning a position. Position speaks about your company. Your position statement should be answered by the question. “Why are we here?” it is your mission statement and corporate charter distilled down to a simple phrase. For our target audience, it is an elevating and aspiring reach that helps pay off our brand. Position Is Not a Sales Tool Position is like real estate. The more secluded and free of neighbors the more valuable the property is, provided it is located in a desirable area. A powerful position is your reason to be. It is the spark that ignited the company in the beginning and is the flame that keeps it going, growing, and innovating. It must never be static and is never defined as a product or service. The best place to start is to look at what you do and ask yourself why you do it. Every product or service you provide meets a need. We are successful only if we create a new product to meet an existing need, illuminate a new need, and fill it, or improve an existing solution to a need. The key element in all this is the word “need.” Positions are real only in the light of a real tangible need. The more immediate the need, the more powerful the position. Our job as marketers is to define the need in unshakeable terms and bring the benefit of vision. A great position allows for growth, change, and personal benefit. Once we know what our customer holds as being necessary, we can position ourselves as the company that understands the importance of delivering it, whatever it is. This is a subtle difference. We are talking about what we believe, not what we do it is in this difference that the marketing position takes its breadth of life. I have seen many poor positions in my experience positions that are unbelievable, indefensible and without real meaning. Such as providing “better products, solutions or systems.” The problem with these ideas is that they have no meaning; they talk about what you do and not why you do it. Why you do it is a differentiating benefit that influences your target market. The more distinct the position is from the competition’s claims, the more powerful it becomes. Marketing is a Different Focus Without the focus provided by a powerful and distinct marketing position, advertising and marketing dollars are wasted. To that end, it is inevitable that a consistency of message and centralization of marketing power be set. All aspects of the brand and position ‘need to be reigned in and one final authority needs to exist. Marketing by committee means certain failure and can only be unlimited spending. The idea of a central theme and marketing/advertising strategy is to manage spending and outperform an independent sales force. Once you have built and evaluated a position, efforts should be turned to brand. Our theory of brand differs from the brand management used by package goods companies. The old brand ideas have failed. Brand was supposed to protect margins against commodity products. However, I am hard pressed to name any package goods product that is not competing today on price and promotion. The care and concern of USP, tag line, logo and consistence of presence are Important, but sound more like corporate identity to me than brand theory. In the Stealing Share modern brand model, brand does not belong to you. It resides in the perception of your customer. We know that position speaks about us and proclaims our reason to be, but speaks about our customer and their need to become. Marketing Needs Brand To Work Brand is the expectation that the customer brings to the purchase of a product or service. It is the difference a customer is willing to pay for your product or service over and above the accepted value of the commodity solution. In the realm of brand resides ail’ profit margins. Brand answers the question “Who am I?” and the who refers to the customer, not us. Everyone is in a constant state of becoming and every purchase choice we make is an attempt at reinforcing whom we believe we are. The purpose of brand is to make the use or purchase of our product or service irresistible, to make the target audience feel incomplete without it. This means making sure that the tenor and personality we project are in keeping with the core beliefs of our target audience. Brand attracts the customer as ice cream attracts children. Building a brand is akin to turning on the power of an electromagnet. The more amps we send through the wire, the more attractive power it influences over the iron shavings it is designed to attract. Lifebooks: Helping Your Children Through Scary Times

By Beth O’Malley In times of trauma, children need caregivers to be pro-active. Recommended in the aftermath of trauma is therapeutic parentinga tall order for those of us who are also affected and are stressed to our limits. How do we figure out what to do? One thing we might all do is create Lifebooks, using this presentation as a guide. Lifebook creation employs strategies similar to those used in therapy, including narrative work, through shaping the fabric of a factual yet understandable account; the imposition of safety and stability through devising a key ritual and, focus on the child, through spending quality time that is memorialized forever. Children love their stories; they love to hear them and read them again and again. To start: 1. Announce the Lifebook Project a) Tell your child that you have decided to make a book thats all about him or her! 2. Make a Date with Your Child a) Take a trip together to a crafts shop or an office supplies store. (Remember, this is about focused time for you and your child.) Get a 3-ring binder and page protectors, or a traditional photo album and insert-able pageswhichever your child prefers. 3. Basics a) A Lifebook focuses on the childs experience. Start with a Title Page, and ask your child to select a favorite photo and help decorate that page. b) Call the book All About Me. Suggest to your son or daughter that s/he have a page of Favorites, a School page, a Best Friends page, a Pet page, a Family page, one for Things I Like To Do, and a Favorite Foods page. c) Move on to current events. Ask your child what s/he knows about the current disaster or tragedy. Notice what is shared, but dont push. Correct any misinformation. (One 6 year old living in Ohio was worried about a big wave coming). See if s/he wants to draw a picture, then let your child choose whether this drawing is included in the book. d) Add a page on Safety.For a younger child (aged 47), list all the people who are working hard to keep him or her safe. For a school-aged child or pre-teen, write down your safety plan. Reassure your child that s/he is safe. e) Go back in time to when s/he was born. Select baby pictures together. Ask other family members to share some funny or memorable stories. Add favorite family times, fun distractions, and the like. f) Continue the book chronologically. You can use grades in school or places lived as focus points. Include important events as defined by the child. g) Finish with a page about the future: a to-do list of family activities, or a brief essay on what s/he wants to be when s/hes grown up. 4. Write up Some of These Stories on Your Computer a) Take lots of notes and create some typed pages. Pretend to be interviewing your child. 5. Make Copies of the Lifebook a) Your childs Lifebook will almost certainly become worn with use and attention. Make color copies and put a second copy in a safe place. Copyright 2005 Beth OMalley. Worrying About What People Say About Your MLM Business?

It is. Why not do what Dale Carnegie advised? I mean, something like: Instead of worrying about what people (co-workers, family members, friends, etc.) may think about us, we just work hard and do something which will create admiration comments from all of them, and create big numbers that way will prove to them what we are made of. Yeah, lets show them our real MLM character! Of course we can. If we work hard at it, that is. But heres a problem right away. A big problem. We dont want to be dependent on people and their approval for us to feel good about MLM. This is not a good thing for us, network marketers/MLMers. Having other peoples approval on a MLM game they dont even know how to play well -otherwise theyd be playing it , I can assure you - is not a good way of conducting our MLM business. Relying on other peoples opinions to see if this mlm deal is good for us or not, is putting these other people at cause point, and us, at effect. Kind of waiting for their final approval seal, as if they were our business mentors. Well, they’re not. Listen, a network marketer is made of a different marketing quality. Different skin, if you like. We are not made of bo-peep (regular) mentality. We’re playing a different game. We play other rules. Theres not much choice anyway: either we play by our rules or we dont survive. Think hard about I just said. Be yourself, please. Be yourself. For Abdominal Weight Loss Clean the Debris Within First

By Foras Aje When seeking to lose weight, most people always point at their abdominal regions first. However, what good is a toned belly if the insides are constipated. Moreover, do you know a cleaner colon leads to a flatter and more toned abs? In today’s age and world, being slim, shapely, possessing ripped abdominal muscles and toned arms seems to be the aim of a vast majority of the people you see spending tons of hours working out at gyms. One stated that he was at a level of doing 50 sit-ups a day. Impressive eh? Well, he had a little protrusion and honestly was slightly overweight. It made me wonder, well he’s not the first I’ve heard discuss abdominal exercises and weight loss, and certainly not the only one who professes to doing so many sit-ups in the quest to lose the gut, therefore, just how effective are these exercises for toning the abs? My point of view is if your diet is not the healthiest, it really may not matter how many crunches or sit-ups you do, if you’re overweight, it will be harder than usual to trim the waist line. Thus, deal with your diet first THEN you will find it much easier to see quick results with an abdominal weight loss plan. Think about it, most debris and encumbrances in the colon are perhaps the main things that 1. Cause the protrusion 2. Lead to Water retention So in conclusion, abdominal exercises are great indeed, but they and their results will be all the more assisted and enhanced by a proper diet. They go hand in hand. The Doomed Marriage

By Jeffrey Hauser It didnt start out that way. There was a time when both of you were deeply in love. During the courtship and dating rituals, you tended to overlook the faults of the other. In fact, you thought they were cute. The way he got upset over the little things and had that pouting expression. The way she rolled her eyes at your pathetic jokes with the sexual overtones. Or when he farted in public and you tried to pretend you didnt notice. Or her secretive glances at the butts of other men. All that was ignored as you moved toward the inevitable next step. You moved in together. Some of the problems escalated at that juncture. His snoring was exasperating at times. The way she never washed the dishes. He left his clothes on the floor. She was a terrible driver. He was a terrible driver. But you were in love and rarely brought up these faux pas. It was just who they were and part of their adorable personality. Then about a year later, it was mutually decided to make it all legal. The big wedding was planned and your friends and family were elated. Of course, very few had been told about the various idiosyncrasies, albeit, quirks of the intended. Just the closest friends, perhaps. But they also assumed that it wasnt bothersome enough to prevent the nuptials from occurring. So the big day came and went. The honeymoon in Cancun, the next year of excitement and exploration. The new baby. Yep, life was good. Sorta. It was discovered that the proud dad wasnt such so great at changing diapers and being around the young one. Instead, he found excuses to go into work earlier and stay later. He still farted, drove terribly, and told those lousy, off-colored jokes. She was an awful housekeeper and not a very good cook. But then again, this was all the same as before the marriage. Its now two years later and nothing has changed. Well, almost nothing. Another baby is now on the way and its open season on each other. The accusations have begun. He is ragging on her because she doesnt have to work and expects him to do household chores when he gets home. Like hang up his own clothes and clean up the garage so they can park at least one car in it. She is screaming for him to go to the store once in a while, although shes home all day and still cant manage to clean or do laundry. Could he hold the baby once in a while? Could she have sex once in a while? Does her mother always have to come over unannounced Does his brother always have to bum some money? Realize that the last few items were just a continuation of what life was like when they shared an apartment prior to their marriage. So, lets fast forward to year five. The children are now age 4 and age 3. He is now working Saturdays to make extra money because she has turned into a spend-aholic. Shes hooked on ordering from HSN and QVC. Shes gained fifty pounds and addicted to ordering Pizza Hut for dinner 3 days a week. He comes home and gets on the computer for hours, playing online poker. They rarely talk and the kids are left to fend for themselves. Sex is almost an unknown region and they have totally different sleeping and waking schedules. Any guesses where this is heading? The sad part is that it didnt have to be this way. Many of the initial annoyances could have been dealt with. If not, then a year of living together should have proven that this union was not mean to be. They could have separated and walked away with their dignity and bank accounts left in tact. But now, if a divorce occurs, there are many negative affects. The children will suffer, the finances will be in a wreck, the whole social structure of the related families will be torn apart and no one will win. Is there a moral to this tale? Of course, or I wouldnt have written it at all. A leopard cant change his spots. Or, in other words, people at the very beginning of a relationship are what the are and what they will be. Years later, even sporting a wedding band, they will be the same person with the same habits. If you could barely stand them as a date, wait until youre living with them full-time. Its a disaster waiting to happen. If you had understood that love wasnt enough to overcome the myriad of nasty habits, you would have run for the nearest exit while you had the chance. Let this serve as a warning to all you dating couples. Love does not conquer all, only in the movies. And trust me, your life is not ready for the big screen. Marketing for the Amateur

The goal here is to provide some basic help for the growing number of small business owners many with start-up ventures who have to market their own products and services The first question Im usually asked in seminars and workshops even by some of the business owners I coach is, How much should I be spending for advertising? My answers always the same, Zero! Why? Because advertising dollars should be an investment, not something you spend. Advertising should bring in more dollars than the price of the efforts many more dollars. Notice how we switched from marketing to advertising? Thats because many business owners believe the two are the same. Theyre not. Marketing includes advertising plus other activities sales promotion, public relations, plus research and development. The latter to learn what would-be customers want, what your competitions doing, plus how to improve what you sell. OK, so how much should you invest in marketing? For every $100 you plan to take in were talking sales, not profits your minimum marketing investment should be between $7 and $10. For a new business, that range should be $11 to $15 because you have to introduce your business plus what your selling. If your written business plan yes, you need one forecasts $200,000 in sales for the year, set aside at least $22,000 for marketing, even up to $30,000. Id use the high end figure because you cant run a newspaper ad, for example, unless someone creates itwrites the words, lays out how the ad will look, photographs or draws the items to appear in it. Oh, and please dont buy into the idea that your newspaper, magazine or phone directory will create the ad youll run with them. Their business is selling advertising space, not creating effective ads that deliver customers ready to part with their money. And radio guys? They sell time spots on their station. They dont create great spots. Web designers? Their name says they design. Dont expect them to write content that works. Unless you know a great deal about marketing, find yourself a marketing firm or other professional you feel comfortable working with.
